This is the most important accessory you can buy. An engine isn’t a balanced box; it’s top-heavy and has a center of gravity that shifts. A load leveler (or “cherry picker leveler”) is a horizontal bar that attaches to the main hook. It allows you to tilt the engine forward and backward using two separate chains. This is absolutely crucial for carefully maneuvering the engine out without it hitting the firewall or radiator support.

3. Dedicated Engine Lift Plates:

For specific engines (like many modern overhead cam engines), a dedicated lift plate that bolts directly to the cylinder head is a fantastic and secure option. These often have a single, centered hook point that connects perfectly to the crane hook, ensuring a balanced lift.

4. Chain and Slings:

For a more DIY approach, heavy-duty chains or nylon slings can be wrapped around the engine block or attached to lifting points on the engine. These then connect to the crane’s hook. This method requires extreme care to ensure the slings don’t slip or pinch on sharp edges.

Safety First: How to Properly Use Your Crane Hook

1. Inspect, Inspect, Inspect: Before anything else, do a visual inspection of the crane hook. Look for any signs of stress, stretching, spękanie, or excessive wear. Ensure the safety latch springs back into place and is not bent or damaged.

2. Know the Rating: Every quality hook is stamped with its Working Load Limit (Wll). This is the maximum weight it’s designed to hold. Your engine, plus transmission if attached, must be under this limit. Remember, the WLL of your hook must be equal to or greater than the crane’s capacity.

3. Secure the Load Properly: When attaching chains to the engine’s lifting points, ensure they are seated correctly in the hook’s saddle (the curved base). The load should always be on the inside of the hook. Never “point load” the tip of the hook, as this can dramatically reduce its strength and cause it to straighten under load.

4. Use the Latch: Always, without exception, ensure the safety latch is closed over the chain or link before applying tension. This prevents the chain from accidentally slipping off the hook during manipulation.

5. Slow and Steady: Lift slowly and in a controlled manner. Take up the slack and do a “test lift” just an inch off the ground. Check your connections, the balance, and the stability of the crane. This is your last chance to correct any mistakes before disaster strikes.
