It’s one of the most common and fundamental types of overhead crane found globally. Let’s break down what each part of that name signifies:

• 1. Eléctrico: This crane is powered by electricity, typically drawn from the facility’s mains supply via conductors running along the crane runway (like busbars or festoon systems). This provides reliable, clean, and controllable power for both movement and lifting.

• 2. Arriba: The crane operates arriba, meaning its primary structure (el puente) runs on elevated rails (the runway beams) fixed to the building’s support columns or a dedicated support structure. This design maximizes the use of vertical space and keeps the valuable floor area clear for other operations.

• 3. De viaje (or Travelling): This refers to the crane’s ability to move horizontally along its runway. This longitudinal movement (often called the “X” axis) is a key feature distinguishing it from stationary lifting devices.

Putting it Together: The EOT Crane in Action

An EOT crane consists of three primary movement mechanisms:

1. The Bridge: The main horizontal beam(s) that span the width of the bay. It travels along the runway rails (the X-axis movement).

2. The Hoist and Trolley: Mounted on the bridge is a trolley. The trolley travels across el puente (the Y-axis movement). Attached to the trolley is the hoist – the mechanism that actually lifts, lowers, and carries the load (providing the Z-axis movement).

3. The Runway: The fixed rails installed high in the building structure on which the entire crane (via its end trucks) travels.

• Monorail Cranes: Typically have a fixed path (a single rail) and a hoist that only moves along that rail. Less flexible than an EOT’s full area coverage.

• Underhung Cranes: Similar to EOTs, but the bridge wheels run on the bottom flange of the runway beams, often allowing closer headroom. They are usually lighter capacity.
